Thursday, 5 March, 2020
The European Brass Band Association [EBBA] and Palangos Orkestras, the local organiser of the 2020 European Brass Band Championships, are delighted to announced that the Norwegian conductor Reid Gilje is confirmed as the conductor of the 2020 European Youth Brass Band.
Commenting on his appointment, EBBA President Ulf Rosenberg said: “Reid is a well-known figure in European banding, as the successful conductor of Eikanger- Bjørsvik Musikklag but also as conductor and adjudicator throughout the band world.
He brings with him a wealth of experience as an arranger as well and conductor. We are all looking forward very much to hearing EYBB 2020 under his leadership.”
Chair of the EBBA Music Commission, Paul Hindmarsh, comments: “Reid has chosen an eclectic mix of music for EYBB to perform throughout the week including a specially commissioned concert opener To the Next Century by Lithuanian composer Linas Rupslaukis and a new arrangement of Lithuanian folk songs. Reid is bringing with him a lively overture of his own and some jazz based pieces from Norway. He has also included a pair of pieces from the USA, Covenant by Bruce Broughton and O Magnum Mysterium by Morton Lauridsen, in Philip Littlemore’s popular arrangement. I’m looking forward to hearing it all.”
EYBB 2020 will be featuring these American pieces in Round 1 of the European Conductors Competition (28 April). Reid and the band is scheduled to give a concert on Wednesday 29 April at nearby Klaipeda. They will also feature in the second part of the final of the Conductors Competition (30 April), the official Opening Ceremony (1 May), Saturday evening’s Gala Concert and in a short final concert before the results of the European Youth Contest are announced.
